I agree with Janet -- do not molest your poor, hard-working worms! I
would say that worms are much better for your soil than bark, anyday.
Depending on the size of the project, maybe you could gently hand-dig some
bark in, trying to keep worm casualties to an absolute minimum? If you
must till for some reason, definitely resuce as many worms as possible
first -- put them in the compost, another part of your yard, something.
I've been working on preparing garden beds (raised, sq ft.) on really
rocky, clay, worm-deprived (I've found three so far, and I carefully
transported them to the compost pile, where they would be safe from my
spade) soil, so the idea of digging in and getting a shovelful of worms is
like some distant heaven I'm striving for. Please don't squander your
bounty!
