I have raised beds. The wooden sides are (so far) six inches higher than
the
soil. I have galvanized roofing nails hammered in every foot in one
direction
and every other foot in the other. I just tied string to them. When they
break
I just tie a new one to the nail. I have only had cats in my garden once
or twice,
they seem to have troubles with all the strings and leave. Another thing
nice
about this now is that I have plastic sheeting on the beds. The string
holds it up off
the crops that survived the winter. (mostly herbs and strawberries)
Prior to all of the raised beds I used some pieces of 1x2 scrap lumber to
outline
a 4x8 bed (see if I liked that location and Sqft gardening) with strong
twine tied
accross it at the appropriate intervals.

Due to my construction technique my beds have an interior dimension of
approximately 3.75 feet by 7.75 feet. So my squares are more like 11 by 10
inches
each. I took a short piece of thin wood and put various sized notches in
it for all
the planting intervals. While most of us can easily eyeball within a
square foot, some
of my beds look ragged. Using this board the garden looks more "neat".

___ ____ ____ ____
      \/ \ / \/
                 \/

The edge of the board looks something like that but it is marked for
1/2 1/3 1/4 foot spacing (modified for my short feet).
