I have a tomato plant which is experiencing severe leaf curl. New growth,
including stems, are curled, and the leaves are not opening. The growth is
healthy, just deformed (although the top of the plant was a lighter green
several weeks ago). There is a moderate infestation of bugs, including
aphids and mites (and maybe thrips?). I have been applying Safer
Insecticidal Soap (the version with Pyrethin(sp?)) several times a week.
The tomato variety is Better Boy. The location is Phoenix (just giving a
little history of the plant here... ;-)).
I applied a liquid wide leaf weed herbicide to my lawn about one month ago,
getting within several feet of the plant. It was not a windy day, but in
retrospect it is possible that drift occurred onto the plant. From what I
have read, this is a common cause of leaf curl, and in fact is the main
reason I'm posting this lengthy question. If drift occurred, does it pose
any health risks (in terms of eating fruit from this plant)? I do not know
what was in the herbicide, though I can go back to the store and read the
label if it matters....
