I tried this last year with much success.  What I did was take a pantyhose 
leg, slit down the side, and wrapped it around the bottom 6"-8" of the stem.  
The pantyhose stretches as the vine expands, and it worked like a charm - no 
borers!  Let's just hope I have the same success this growing season.
