The squash vine borer stops laying its eggs at about the same time each
year .. that time depending on your location. It is the eggs that hatch
into worms that bore into the stem.

Contact your Cooperative Extension and find out when that time occurs in
your area.

Start your plants a few weeks before that time and set them out under a
row cover until the blossoms  need to be polinated .... no more squash
vine borer problem.
