The SF method aids in pollination, vs a long row of corn...
Because corn takes a lot of nitrogen in my sandy soil, I only grow two 4
x 4.
 
I selected a shorter variety, btw, with 1-2 cobs..from Burpee catalog
(can't recall variety, sorry). Strongly urge you to grow a variety best
for your climate.
 
Also planted a few Romano Pole beans, my families favorite around the
edge of the 4 x 4. Worked out really well!
