I grow two blocks of corn every year, one early and one regular season, 
spacing the plants 1 foot apart, just like in the book.  I have had great 
success with all plants producing at least one ear of corn, and about half 
producing more than one ear.  The key is to make sure you fertilize on a 
regular basis.  I like to use a product from Gardens Alive called "Sweet Corn 
Alive".  It is a dry organic fertilizer made just for corn.  Hope this helps.
