Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Hi, my name is Dori and I am new to the square foot gardening world,
well gardening in general. Okay, my mom had a garden up until I was
10 years old but I don't remember much about that, other than weeding.
My husband, Bryan, and I recently bought a new house in Monroe, Wa.
(suburb of Seattle) Found out last week I am in Zone 7. I have
enjoyed reading these e-mails and have enjoyed reading Mel's book
however only half way through it. Time is a ticking and if we don't
start soon, we won't have any garden this year.
I have picked a spot and am in the process of building a 4'x7'x 12"
raised garden using 2 - 6x6's on each side with a vertical support on
one end. I want to stay small this year but have picked another spot
to add next year.
So I have a couple questions, hoping you experienced sqfter can help
get me started.
1. There is a organic soil place down the road that has a garden mix
which consists of:
25% Sandy Loam (don't really know what this is)
30% Sand
30% Manure compost
15% Alder compost
Is this a good starting soil? What should I add to it? Vermiculite?
2. I have 2 half barrels for tomatoes, is there a companion I can put
with it until they get large?
3. Any suggestions from any other Seattlites?
Thanks
Dori
