A friend mentioned that her mother grew potatoes on an unconstrained bed of
straw. To harvest, she would pick up the plant, pick a few potatoes off
the roots, and put the plant back down and recover with straw. She says
the plants would keep growing, relatively undisturbed, and thus they had an
extended crop this way.
I'm not quite certain that this is in keeping with the tight land
utilization scheme of square foot gardening, but it might work fine for
those who have the extra room. I think I'll give it a try...
