Square Foot Gardening List - http://myweb.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Frank!!!!!!!!!!!! You made me laugh!!!!!!!!! Actually- in spite of the fact that Bill thought that maybe it would be okay to leave the nasty buggers in the pile- I started a new pile and put it in the sun- I think if I try your  idea- it might work- I'll be darned if I am going to lose all that good compost to  roaches!  I have a lot of other bugs in there- but as Cathy suggested- there is probably too much organic stuff in the mix  being under two fruit trees- Ah- live and learn!       I don't want to kill off all the bugs in the pile(something that never would have occurred tro me as being a problem a year ago!) so won't do the boric acid thing- but I don't think they like the light- and so will expose them to sunlight- if that doesn't do the job- will just haul them off to a nearby field and start all over(sob!)  Armenian cukes are amazing- as well as patty pans- peppers are poop-poo and tomatoes are still waiting to get ready- strange considering how fast everyone elses have done in much colder climates- this year has been an experiment- will try some new techniques next year- where is TRUDI by the way- I miss her posts!  Bye-Teri

Hi Teri,

Bummer about la cucaracha festival in yer pile, eh?

Set out those boric acid cockroach traps under cover, mixing borax into the pile is a definite no-no.

Try this to kill them in mostly finished compost: Put the compost up in heavy duty clear plastic bags, being sure it is reasonably moist (add water if not) and set them out, tightly sealed, in the hot sun for a day or three. Then, open up the bags, or poke holes in them, and let the compost sit (in the shade is ok) for a couple of weeks so that it gets aerobic again, before you use it, as anaerobic compost could be toxic to the plants.

I guess I never have roaches cuz all the worms leave them nothing to eat, not to mention my guard centipedes and ground beetles would prolly eat them before they could set up housekeeping....

Good composting, and try to relax, watch a nice episode of the X-files, eh? Just not the cockroach episode, nor the tobacco beetle episode, nor the El Chupacabra episode....;-)

Reminds me of when I worked in an evil animal facility, and would come in at night to clean the rat cages....turn on the lights, and they would all head for the drain hole, some of them those big pine roaches....disgusting! All God's Creatures, nonetheless....

Mule Team Borax- have used it for fleas- wonder if it is ok in the compost.   God those roaches are yucky- fat and brown and nasty- yuk yuk yuk yuk-get out get out get out!!!!!!!!!!!. Teri,
Where are you?  I assume that since you refer to it as Paradise that you are living in the vicinity of citrus fruit trees. If so I would suggest moving your compost pile and possibly limiting the kitchen refuse you use.  Use grass clippings and garden refuse for the green matter. One suggestion is Borax (20 Mule Team) for getting rid of cockroaches.  I know that this works in the house but I'm not sure about outside.(might make mighty bubbles when it rains!!)   One thing that a compost pile needs is the sun for heat.  And the roaches shouldn't like the light or the extreme heat.  If you can move it, it might be worth the trouble.
Hope this helps,
Cathy
