Square Foot Gardening List - http://myweb.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Hi Teri,
Bummer about la cucaracha festival in yer pile,
eh?
Set out those boric acid cockroach traps under cover, mixing
borax into the pile is a definite no-no.
Try this to kill them in mostly finished compost: Put the
compost up in heavy duty clear plastic bags, being sure it is reasonably moist
(add water if not) and set them out, tightly sealed, in the hot sun for a day or
three. Then, open up the bags, or poke holes in them, and let the compost sit
(in the shade is ok) for a couple of weeks so that it gets aerobic again, before
you use it, as anaerobic compost could be toxic to the plants.
I guess I never have roaches cuz all the worms leave them
nothing to eat, not to mention my guard centipedes and ground beetles would
prolly eat them before they could set up housekeeping....
Good composting, and try to relax, watch a nice episode of the
X-files, eh? Just not the cockroach episode, nor the tobacco beetle episode, nor
the El Chupacabra episode....;-)
Reminds me of when I worked in an evil animal facility, and
would come in at night to clean the rat cages....turn on the lights, and they
would all head for the drain hole, some of them those big pine
roaches....disgusting! All God's Creatures, nonetheless....

they like it dark and mosit- have not added a lot of kitchen waste - but
being uner fruit trees and near old sheds- it is perfect for the little
critters.I can't think of anything I would rather do this Saturday than move
a 6x6 foot pile of compost.Needed to be turned soon anyhow..... Mule
Team Borax- have used it for fleas- wonder if it is ok in the
compost. God those roaches are yucky- fat and brown and nasty-
yuk yuk yuk yuk-get out get out get out!!!!!!!!!!!. I got the heebee

Teri,
Where are you? I assume
that since you refer to it as Paradise that you are living in the
vicinity of citrus fruit trees. If so I would suggest moving your
compost pile and possibly limiting the kitchen refuse you use. Use
grass clippings and garden refuse for the green matter. One suggestion
is Borax (20 Mule Team) for getting rid of cockroaches. I know
that this works in the house but I'm not sure about outside.(might make
mighty bubbles when it rains!!) One thing that a compost pile
needs is the sun for heat. And the roaches shouldn't like the
light or the extreme heat. If you can move it, it might be worth
the trouble.
Hope this helps,
Cathy
