I'm confused about watering

Can anyone help me? I'm pretty new to gardening, and one major source of
confusion for me is when to water. Each book I read says something
slightly different. Let's take zukes as an example. One book says to water
if the top 4 inches are dry. Another says to go down 12 inches and see if
the soil particles at that depth stick together into a pliable ball that
sticks to the hand as you shape it. Another says to water 1" per
week.Another says to push a water meter in 6 in. and water if it reads
"4".Another says the soil should never feel dry under the mulch.

Well, only about the top inch is dry, the soil at 12 inches does not stick
together, it hasn't rained this week (except for a sprinkle), my water
meter at 6 in. reads a "6" or "7", and the soil under the mulch feels dry!
What to do?

Please e-mail me directly, as I find it too difficult to scroll thru all
the posts on the list. Thanks!
