Melissa and All, I grew Brandywines last year and found them to be too acid for my taste. Of course, I like my tomatoes on the sweet fruity side. I agree that heat, plenty of sunlight and certain minerals in the soil do more to determine flavor in tomatoes than anything else. Next year, you might try mulching your Brandywines with black or red plastic. I've read that those two colors heat soil, and the red reflects certain sun wavelengths on to plant leaves. Also, a healthy dose of fish meal emulsion every couple of weeks or pelleted fish meal in the soil add some great minerals and humic acids--all make better flavor.
