I have drilled holes into plastic buckets successfully using two methods.
1 -- Began drilling holes with an 1/8 inch bit, then increased the bit sizes
until I had the hole size I wanted.
2 -- Used a flare-tipped bit (pardon my technical jargon, LOL) that drilled a
hole in the plastic 1/2 inch wide in a fraction of a second without splitting
the plastic.
Since I get tired of borrowing my friends drill, I have also nailed holes
into plastic pails by turning the pail upside down over a piece of wood
smaller than the diameter of the pail. Then hammered nail holes through the
pail just a bit into the wood and removed the nail. Perfect holes.
Good luck.
