Dave,

        I'm not sure about the when of planting in your zone, but the spacing
depends on the variety and how you intend on maintaining them.  For the
so-called June-bearers, you can plant 12 inches apart if you intend upon
controlling and clipping extra runners, 24 inches if you are going to allow
runners to spread (they still should be limited, otherwise the plants will
spend all energy in runners and little in fruiting.)

        Everbearers, both the double bearing and the true day-neutrals, produce
limited amounts of runners, so planting at 1 per square is fine.  I
wouldn't plant them any closer otherwise you would encourage molds and
diseases to spread.
