Anybody have any new information or advice to share about recommended
spacing for sweetcorn? I will be planting for the fall crop in about 3
weeks. Based in part on the extensive thread on this topic last spring, I
planted the spring crop in 4' X 8' blocks at 1 hill/sqft with 2 stalks per
hill. I had 2 hybrids (Early Sunglow and Breeder's Choice) and 2 OPs
(Golden Bantam and Country Gentleman). For the hybrids, pollination was
good, the ears were well-filled with kernals but were smaller than usual.
For the fall crop, I plan to go back to 8' X 8' blocks with 18-inch spacing
for the hybrids and 24 inch spacing for the OPs. Garden space is not a
problem for me but sqft gardening is very useful for conserving water,
particularly in the spring and early summer.
