Melissa, you might want to have a look at Http://www.onelist.com when
I checked a couple of weeks ago they were saying that they were unable
to host new lists but hoped the situation would clear up in the next
week or two. I am on a couple of lists from them and they seem to work
fine and they are free.
IN THE MEAN TIME!!
Perhaps it would be best when sending messages to the list that we
simply refrain from using the CC: address field altogether. Using it,
as we have seen in the past few days really seems to create a self
replicating beast.
So if it is necessary to send the same message to two different places
PLEASE send two seperate messages and do not use the CC: function till
this is cleared up. By taking a moment to be certain before you click
the send button, that the CC: field is empty, we can hopefully avoid
these repeats. Lets leave the cloning to the scientists.
If, as in the case of our latest example the addressed recipient is
also subscribed to the list, then sending an extra copy of the message
to them is completly unnecessary as they, along with the other 509
current subscribers will get it via the list anyway.
I know that in some email programs hitting the RE: button fills the
TO: address with the senders address rather than the list address so
instead of CC'ing the list, delete the senders address and replace it
with the list address. If the problem is in fact caused by the CC:
field, and it sure looks like it is, lets try to avoid using it at
all.
An alternative, if multiple addressing is necessary is to place all
the addresses in the TO: field seperated by commas, eg.
aaa@bbb.com,zzz@eee.com,sqft@lists.umsl.edu etc.
The last time I offered some advice on this subject apparently it was
misunderstood by some that I was giving them heck, this is certainly
NOT my intention so don't take it personally. Please do not
misunderstand my feeble attempt at trying to help sort this out.
Brian
