Tomatoes should be planted 4 plants in a 1 ft x 4 ft trough (ie
bed.) That is fairly close spacing (I planted this close this year).
You need to make sure you remove the suckers and any branches that
are not the main leader. If you get any branches forming fruit other
than the main leader, cut them off. Suckers are the shoots that form
in the crook of a leaf branch and the main shoot. Remove these as
well.
I am using the 6 ft. spirals made specifically for tomatoes. This
has helped me keep the tomatoes in line since they provide no support
to outlying branches.
