This is my 4th year using T-tapes and I would never go back to soaker hoses.
My irrigation systems are made up to be portable and will work for any 4' X
8' bed. Each system uses one 4' piece of commercial 5/8 ' drip supply
tubing, one FHT compression fitting, four couplers to connect the T-Tapes to
1/8" emitter holes punched into the 4" supply line, and four 8' long
T-Tapes. The T-tapes are run in parallel 12" apart and the ends closed off
by bending about 1" of the tubing back and slipping on a 1" piece of PVC
pipe, The downstream open end of the supply tube is also closed off the
same way. The system should always be flushed out at the beginning of the
season to eliminate any foreign matter, The system can be connected with a
garden hose but you need a filter and also a backflow preventer (required by
most codes), a pressure reducer (which is also advisable for soaker hoses to
help equalize the distribution). The major problem I always had with soaker
hoses, I never knew how much water was being applied and probaly always
supplied more than the plants could use. This doesn't hurt most plants,
just wastes water. The problem of uneven distribution can be corrected with
pressure reducers and compensators and also by looping the downstream end of
the soaker back to the supply so the water is applied at both ends. Soaker
hoses may be okay is regions where there is an inexpensive pure water supply
and the water bill is not a problem.

Subject: Promised report: T Tape for irrigation
>Hi
>
>Last year I promised a report on my T Tape system, I didn't get it up, This
>year I did.
>
>The short version is that I am disappointed. I think that Soaker TUBING (or
>Soaker Dripline- see DRIPWORKS, below) will work out better. I am committed
>to T Tape as I bought 2000' at a close out and am making the best of it. I
>have not done enough research on the soaker tubing and will make a report
>when I so do.
>
>The probs are:
>Foreign matter WILL get in the individual outlet channel and plug THAT
>channel. (A 200 mesh filter will clean up the source water, but foreign
>matter from work on pipes, supply tubing et al is difficult to keep out.
>
>Getting around corners is impossible with the T Tape, it swells into a
round
>tube when operational and simply kinks at the corners. This doesn't seem to
>damage the tape, but it does limit flow. I shall fix this! One can buy
>corner fixtures for the 5/8" tape but not the 3/8" that I have (2000' of.)
I
>think that 5/8" tape would be overkill.
>
>It's very time consuming to set up numerous 4' or 6' runs of tape, not to
>mention the expense of the adapter parts.
>
>This system is perfect for row crops up to 600' runs. I think that it
>provides good control of the amount of water delivered to specific areas
and
>virtually eliminates air evaporation losses. With controllers it can be
>timed
>to deliver irrigation during the best time of day, ad inf.
>
>It is not a realistic system for SQ-FT gardens except for beds of10'+ long.
>
>For those of you that are interested, DRIPWORKS, 231 E. San Francisco St.,
>Willits, CA 95490, www.dripworksusa.com or E-mail dripworks@pacific.net
have
>been JUST GREAT!!!!!! (USUAL DISCLAIMERS) They have been very forthcoming
w/
>info and have GREAT prices. They provide mat'ls for a variety of systems. I
>have been very pleased with service and delivery, and I'm tough to please.
>
>Further reports as info available.

>Regards,
