when to harvest pumpkins

Thanks to everyone for the info of sterilizing my garden.  Now, I have one
pumpkin plant in a four foot square that has produced 5 medium-small pumpkins
(8" diameter).  When do I harvest these?  Do they keep better on the plant or
do they need to get harvested and stored or they will rot.  One problem is
that in this weather my house is 90 to 100 during the day when I'm not home,
we've had some real hot weather.  So, it's either store them in the
refrigerator or on the plant, I think.  Please let me know, they're really
cute.  Lauren
