A steady water supply (they don't like erratic watering) and plenty of
feeding is needed, squash in particular are particularly heavy feeders.
Toms need sun/warmth to ripen. There has been a thread in the newsgroup
uk.rec.gardening, as they are a bit slow in the UK this year 'cos we've
not had that much sun this year.
It has been suggested (and it seems it may be working for some people)
that if you hang a Banana near the toms they will ripen quicker. It's
because of the ethylene gas released by the ripe bananas.
