Although this is not an enriching crop, many Texas gardeners plant sweet
potatoes, because the vines cover the ground and shade it. After the tubers
are harvested, the vines are dug into the earth. At least, you get
something productive out of the soil when it's so darn hot!! I tried it one
year and harvested a decent crop; plus the garden looked green, cool and
attractive.
