Hi Olin,
I don't know what part of the country you live in, but your USDA zone
is the same as mine in So. Calif. Two years ago I seeded parts of my
garden that weren't going to be used in the fall/winter with fava
beans. They grew fantastically, and improved the soil incredibly, but
I didn't like having to deal with 6 foot tall woody stems when I dug
the roots in. Last year I used Austrian field peas. They grew just as
prolifically, and I think they improved the soil just as well (my
tomatoes sure love it this summer), but they were much lower to the
ground, and once died out (from lack of watering after winter was
over) they were very easy to deal with. I've never grown clover,
though someone here in the southland has and recommends it. If you
live in an area like mine, watering will be necessary probably through
September, but after that the temps should go down, and the beans or
peas will take off.
Let us know what you choose and where you're located.

Any recommendations for hot weather cover crops (daytime highs above 105
deg. F and nighttime lows in the high 80s)?
Anybody have experience with Sesbania (available from Peaceful Valley Farm
Supply)?
