Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
June 14, 97 I planted (late) +/- 48 corn plants in a 4'X4' Sq, along w/
squash, beans, marigolds and radishes. This provided (2) large Blue
Hubbards, a few Scarlet Runner beans and a moderate yield of Early Sunglow
corn.
5/2/98 I seeded (6) rows of (6) corn plants in a 4'X4' Sq and got about 60
full ears.
5/1/99 I seeded (5) rows of (6) corn plants and am anticipating (the first)
corn for supper tonight.
The point is that 36 plants in 16 12" Sqs yielded 1 2/3 fully developed ears
per plant, which leads to the supposition that "crowding doesn't diminish
pollination to the extent of limiting yield. Had I planted 16 plants (ie one
per 12" sq) the yield could have been no more than 32 ears - I got 60 ears
from the same space!
I would look at other conditions, unless you are not limited by space or
time.
