Bugs: A mother and her babies??

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Hi all,

I am so curious about a bug seen frequently in my garden and I have not been
able to find it in my books. Maybe someone can help. It is dark brown,
about 1" long and somewhat resembles a soldier beetle with the spines on the
shoulder. A distinguishing characteristic is that on its back legs there is
a diamond shape projection that fans out on either side of the leg. I have
seen several of these through the summer and have never noticed them doing
any damage. Yesterday I spotted it on my blackeyed peas and surrounding it
were 10-12 tiny very "red" baby bugs crawling up and down a pea pod right by
the big bug as though they were pups with their mother. She seemed to be
watching over them. I have never seen these "baby" bugs before yesterday.
They were still there in the very same spot today, all day long. Could this
be a mother bug with her babies??

Thanks,
Juliana
