Or, I just cover mine with some brown stuff and don't have many problems. I
do remember one time when a raccoon (probably) actually removed the slat to
gain access -- but I've had no other problems. Besides, they found our corn
crop and had much BETTER pickings (and left us none).
When we first moved here and I told my husband we were going to do as much
composting as possible, he resisted because of the smell. I told him (having
READ all about it <g>) that *a properly done compost doesn't smell." I hoped
what I'd read was right. And by golly, it was! I was out turning mine today
and did encounter a few iffy aromas somewhere just under the top of one, but
they were quickly re-covered in the turning process and the smell was buried
as well. Neat!
I also remember reading about how to know when the compost is ready -- the
woodsy, earthy aroma of the dark substance without any visible components
(except woodier pieces like twigs and pine cones or whole oak leaves which
don't usually compost very quickly). I was skeptical -- I didn't think I'd
be able to tell. But I was! (Oh, the delight of small victories!! And big
learning experiences.)
