Re: compost and vermin

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Vegetable scraps are high nitrogen and decompose really quickly. We keep a
small covered garbage can outside and deposit coffee grounds, filters, and
other kitchen scraps in that each day. When we turn the pile, we layer the
scraps in the center as we turn. Or, sometimes I dig a little ways in the
pile, put in the food scraps and cover it up. I've never had a problem
with rodents in 15 years of composting. We did have a rodent problem in
the neighborhood last summer due to the drought and new construction, I
think, but I never saw any sign of them near the compost pile. Actually, I
think I would have rather seen them in the compost than running across my
terrace to eat bird seed that had fallen on it! Disgusting!

I've also had more problems with the smell from grass clippings than from
food scraps. Oh, as mentioned by others, meat, dairy, and fats are not
recommended for home composting piles.

Try it! You'll like it. It's the best stuff in the world for improving
your garden soil. I may be prejudiced, but I don't think the packed
compost compares to homemade.
