RE: Bush Bean Seedlings

I've been thinking about fencing strategies as well. We're currently
renting a house, and plan to buy or build one in a few years. Since I won't
be building my permanent garden until we own a house, I get to play with the
one I currently have, and learn from it. Since I'm relatively new to
gardening, I think of the garden as a sort of testing ground for lots of
different things, from garden layout and spacing to fencing and just about
everything else. I know that anything I do now is not permanent, and
therefore mistakes are simply learning tools.

For my future garden, I envision a back yard that is completely fenced in,
and a permanent garden area within that which would have a 3 foot high or so
picket type fence, or maybe even one like Mel shows in the book. (The only
requirement of DH is that this area has to look nice.) Then I would
reinforce that with chicken wire fencing, with the chicken wire buried into
the ground. I then plan on planting the perimeter of the fencing with
flowers and maybe some herbs or ornamental veggies mixed in.

I have had problems with animals in my gardens too. I planted
cucumbers about a month or so ago. They started to come up fine, then
one day, they were gone. I planted the rest of the seeds ( I only had 4
left) and protected the one plant that germinated by putting things
around this plant. It grew fine. I even put one of those little fences
around this part of the garden to keep my golden retriever out of the
gardens. Well, I hate to report that in spite of all this, my only
cucumber plant left also disappeared. I have squash planted in another
garden, but it looks like the same thing might be happening there. It
starts off where the leaves look wilted, then the next day, the leaves
are gone. After that, the stem disappears. My dog is so hyper, I could
imagine that he could do that, but I have a fence around it and he would
have to push through that and it would seem he would leave paw prints in
the garden, but I don't see any. My next step is to build an area around
the garden section, and make it like a huge garden, but put mulch in
that area instead, making a walkway around each of the gardens, kind of
like the one on the "Square Foot Gardening" book. Then put a little
fence around all that. I may have to put a covering or netting over the
top to reinforce animals staying out. I know this will cost alot of
money, but if it isn't the animals eating the garden stuff, I need to
find out what exactly it is.
