At school (Birmingham, Alabama - zone 7.5) we are going to also plant
onions, garlic, turnips, beets, radishes, potatoes, and carrots. This is
basically an experiment because I remember planting carrots one fall -
nothing happened, and in spring, much to my surprise, carrot tops appeared.

We will plant 4 beds - 3' x 12'. One for leaf crops (lettuce, spinach, and
cabbage), one for root crops, one for herbs (parsley, sage, rosemary,
oregano, garlic, chives), and one for flowers (panseys, snapdragons,
nasturtium, and broccoli-also a flower that we eat!)

Since we didn't get frost last year until December, and we figure the global
warming trend won't reverse immediately, we're going to take the gamble and
see what we get. I think it makes the kids appreciate what farmers go
through worrying about weather and their crops. ALso makes the kids
consider days till maturity of crops and the number of days until the
potential frost. Great math problems!
