I've also had problems with melons this year. Earlier in the summer,
everything was going well, the vines looked great and the fruit was setting,
and actually growing quite nicely. Then, the heatwave hit. The cantaloupe
vines started dying back, and the melons were still green. I did have some
new growth on the vines, so I thought I'd leave the melons on as long as I
could, and finally picked them last week when they started turning yellow.
They looked ok and smelled sweet, but they hardly had any taste at all.
Maybe I left them on too long?? I also have 3 watermelons that are only
about half the size they should be. They just stopped growing at some
point. The vines look very healthy though, so I will leave the melons on
until either the vines start dying, or the watermelons show signs of being
ripe. Is it possible for the melons to ripen even though they are much
smaller than they should be? Or, is it even possible that they might start
growing again?

Cyn,
There are scarlet runner beans, but I believe the plants are what is
poisonous or something. I can't remember, because I don't grow
them. Be assured though, that your purple beans aren't a problem
to you though. <vbg>
How did your melons turn out? I had a bad year with that stuff, due
to the heat.
