Re: Another Fall Planting question

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

I usually order from Burpee, Johnny's, Mellinger's, Peaceful Valley Farm
Supply, Territorial Seeds or Native Seeds/SEARCH. All have catalogs on the
web (use a search engines) except NSS which has only a site where you can
order the catalog. These are not necessarily the best or the only good ones
but I've been using them for quite a few years so it is a bit of a habit.
Many people on these email lists seem to like Pinetree but my experience
with them has always been poor germination.

We have a very short growing season and we need to push the envelope a bit
but the Eastern US companies (e.g., Burpee, Johnny's) and some mid USA
companies (Henry Fields, Gurney) refuse to ship transplants and roots early
enough for us to use because of the published last "frost free" dates.
Burpee's and Johnny's seed germination is excellent - Henry Field & Gurneys
just so-so. Mellinger's catalog is available in early December which gives
us time to order and start tomato seeds between Christmas and New Year's
Day. Peaceful Valley (my personal favorite) has organic seeds and also has
the most useful growing supplies. Territorial's catalog has the best
information about varieties and how to grow them. NSS specializes is
somewhat regional and specializes in seeds by and for native Americans -
interesting products and a worthwhile mission.

A lot of gardeners have pretty strong opinions about seed and plant sources.
I believe most are pretty good but all have some strengths and weaknesses.

Olin
