Raised beds & cold frame

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

I have a raised bed of a non-standard size & would like to put a cold
frame on top of it this winter. I don't have room to have a separate
cold frame, so it must be on top of the raised bed. The bed is pretty
much full to the top with soil, so I'll need extra height so that
crops have some 'head room.' I've been reading Eliot Coleman's
"4-Season Harvest" where he makes the point that you don't want a lot
of extra 'head room;' but of course crops grow at different heights.
Anybody have any suggestions for how to construct & of what material?
i'm afraid that the non-standard size of the bed rules out ready made
cold frames. BTW, I'm not a total klutz, but nearly so in terms of
constructing things! I don't want to spend a ton of $$. Would hoops
& a cover help much during winter?? I'm afraid they wouldn't be enuf
protection.
