Upon rereading my post i realize that i didn't explain the connection.
Cigarette tobacco is sometimes infected with the tobacco mosaic virus.
Tomatoes are susceptible to this disease. The first place i read this was
in a book called _Square Foot Gardening_, by Mel Bartholemew. Martha
Wells's experiment shows that there may be some truth to this folk tale.

(Full disclosure: i happen to be a non-smoker. I hope this doesn't
compromise my scientific objectivity.)
