I have not used the tire method of growing potatoes, but I have demonstrated
growing potatoes in a barrel.
It is great. No bugs. Mulch with straw (although I read you don't like to do
that). At the end of the season, just tip the barrel over and there are all of
your potatoes.
By the way, about the straw thing. I have mulched the entire garden with straw
for years. No problems with viruses or moles/voles, and very few bugs. Maybe
it's success depends upon the area of the US.
