potatoes

  Got
lots of potatoes, but had two problems. 1: the wire fencing let in
light, which meant that the potatoes that grew on the perimeter were
exposed to light and were too green to eat. 2: 3 foot fence wire was
too tall for me--I couldn't lean down well enough into the "container"
to brush the compost off the leaves after I'd shoveled/forked it in. I
guess that's why folks use tires--cuz you can build it as you go up.

the tires would also take care of the light problem...very clever now that
i think about it. but that generates another question...what radius will
give the plants enough room to be as fruitful as possible? jane-how wide
was your potato heap? now i can also see the enterpreneural possiblities
of marketing a lightweight stackable potato box (instead of heavy, dirty
tires). anyone else have the time and energy to pursue that? i'll sell
the idea for 20% of the profits!!!
