I'm moving away from blood and bone myself ... a good alternative to blood
and bone is fish meal for nitrogen and fish bone meal for phosphorus.  Kelp
meal is of course excellent for potash and provides many trace minerals ...
and a bovine-free garden!  ;-)  Besides working these relatively fast
acting nutrients into the soil in spring, a "tonic" of fish & seaweed liquid
fertilizer is great at transplant time especially.
