Yeah, my husband is on the way to the hardware store right now to buy some
chicken wire for the bottom of the beds. I don't know yet if I have gophers
since we just moved here, but better now than after I get the dirt in.
I used two 2x10's stacked on each other and nailed (galvanized corkscrew
deck nails) to a 4x4 post sunk 18" into the ground. The whole thing is 4x10
feet. It's the first thing I ever built so I'm feeling pretty proud of
myself right now. And Yes, after looking into it I decided to use
pressure-treated lumber in spite of the possible issues. I just wasn't
convinced it was enough of a problem not to, and, since I needed something
that was better looking than cinder block I decided to go with it.
The ground is only a little uneven so the difference between one end and
the other doesn't look like it is more than three inches. It's just looking
a little wavy. I suspect I will just live with it.
The original plan was to build two 4x10s side by side but when we were at
Home Depot yesterday we decided to just do half of the project and see how
it went. We thought it would be better to have a completed job that was
half the intended size than to have an uncompleted job that was full-sized.
So we'll take whatever learning we can from this try and apply it to the
second bed.

I got a mixed opinion on this before I started. My original plan was to
rototill first, but I was convinced to just go for it, putting newspapers
down first to kill out the weeds.
