Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
I grew day-neural strawberries (Tribute) for the first time this year and
was happy with the results. I used a boxed raised bed of 30" x 76"; once
that bed was filled with soil mixed with compost, I plopped another 12" x
56" box (made out of 2 x 8 pine planks) inside and filled it with soil
mixed with compost.. The result was terraced box beds that gave the
plants a bit more growing room than a simple raised bed. I ordered 25
strawberry roots from Burpee; I planted them the day after UConn won the
NCAA college basketball championship (I live in Connecticut) which I
think was in mid April. I planted 24 plants at 9" spacing; growth was
slow at first, but then picked up. I removed all flowers that appeared
until about mid June. The first strawberries appeared in July, and
production was fairly decent through mid September, although the size of
the strawberries seemed to diminish somewhat. I was pleasantly surprised
since I had read in some accounts that production would be low the first
year. There's a "Step-by-Step" article on planting strawberries in the
April 99 issue of Horticulture that I found useful.
