   Sounds like it would work great for harvesting.  As to getting ALL the
root
and ending the plant, I doubt it.  They have deep roots and are very
persistent.
however if done with leaving the grass tall then the new shoots will get
shaded
 to death as they do love sunlight.  I will go to home depot and see if I
can get
one.  Then I can use the greens cooked, the stems with pasta, and the flower
heads for wine.  The root and collar can get buried in compost to be cooked
to
death for next years compost.
   There is another device which consists of what looks like a snakes tongue
on a stick with the inside of the fork being sharp to cut the root when
shoved
under the plant but again it doesn't get all the root.  It's like
horseradish.  Leave
a little root and it will become a whole plant.  Think I will try that in a
5 gal.
