Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
My husband and I are first timers and are trying to plan our garden. (we
live in southern CA -zone 9 or 18) We've decided on raised beds and are now
trying to guess what veggies and herbs will do best in this area. I got
really exited last month and bought a load of seeds on sale without thinking
about what might actually GROW in this desert. So I'm going to forge ahead
with what I've got and plan on learning the hard way what will survive! :)
Before you waste a lot of time try going to Http://www.almanac.com The
Old farmers almanac contains a lot of info. Farmer Browns site at
http://www.flinet.com/gallus/sqft.html < I hope I typed that right as I
could not get it to copy/paste> will lead you to Mell's book and Jonathan's
prg. Garden Manager 3.0. Both excellent works. Finally Pinetree Seeds at
http://www.superseeds.com/ sells inexpensive seeds by making smaller packs.
I wouldn't waste much time though your season may be starting soon out
there. I am in z5 in NY.
A couple of pretty basic questions that maybe someone could help us with.
First: How deep should our beds be? As this is our first time we have NO
idea what the soil is like under the grass. How far down will most veggies
send roots? I would like to try my luck with onions, carrots and perhaps
leeks in the fall. We initially thought 12" but perhaps 6..... any
thoughts?
If you have lots of leaves and grass I should think putting them in the
bottom half of 12" beds would be a good idea. Cover with a good topsoil.
If your own does not contain to much sand or clay, use that and save money.
Thanks in advance for any help! I'm sure we will be back with more
questions as it all progresses.
I hope so :-)
