>I live in Maine (Zone 4A) and we can grow tomatoes here.
Therefore, I am sure you can grow them in NY.
However, the productive season is short.

Act like a detective always. Poke. Listen. (You did that well.)
Now piece the clues together, (which she did for you.)
Short season.
Start early with transplants. Make hot caps from milk jugs.
Try a product called Wall-O-Water. 3 for $9. Or tightly tie
6, 2 liter bottles, full and capped, or many 1 ltr bottles
around ea plant or intersperce these in garden and around
borders. Since tomato spacing is great unless using the
single/dual leader pruning system, you'll just have room.
Use early varieties. In Alaska, 50-55 day Early girls
run out to 120 days. Low light. They NEED "root zone
warmth." They need 50F to make blossoms work, even at
night, as a minimum and I think there's an upper F too.
Green house to whatever degree you can. In any way you
can in early season and late season.
Black plastic mulch for soil warmth. This must be done
ahead as much as a month. Add a spacer like pvc or 2x2
and add clear glazing to that.
Reflect heat giving light w/flat white paint, silvered
mylar, or aluminum foil. get a soil thermometer or a meat
thermometer or even a red filled (not mercury in case of
breakage) thermometer and insert it in the soil a few
inches down, stake nearby for protection, and plot the
temps as it rises to predict when to pounce!
Locate via phone and predrive nurseries and ask pointedly
about when they sell this and thsat and let them see you
write it down. Stagger-start seeds like Ron in case
some early or late.
Best thing for depression is a tinsy break, then involved work.
Have a cupa tea... then Go-go-go-go-go Girl!!!!! :>)
