Re: [hexagonal planting]

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

>kragen
I> guess some of you may be familiar with hexagonal planting; basically,
you can fit about 15% more circles into a given area if you pack them
in a hexagonal lattice instead of a square lattice

*See inside back cover of Dec Scientific American.

>Laying hexagonal gardens out on square graph paper is miserable. So
(here's why I'm posting) I made some hex graph paper that you can print
out on your own printer.

*Cool. Still prefer it on a spreadsheet, but you bring up that very
interesting point... "tri-state," as opposewd to "bi-stable," sorta.

>Related links:
- I made a modified version that uses letters instead of dots;
This is more silly than useful.

*Modified, is a way to track plantings...

>I'm going to be starting my first triangular-foot garden
in a month or two here in Dayton,
>it'll be a hexagon four feet across the corners, about 10.4
square feet, and ideally, it should hold as many plants as a
12-square-foot square garden.

*This lends itself to a mini geospherically topped, hex-type
greenhouse to warm soil and advance your season!

*To issues, of course this IS SqFt, so you will have to
move on, but stay in touch! <lol> I see advantages and
disadvantages in things like hoeing. OK... I never have
to do this, so it's probably no issue... how about water
drip distribution... Other than packing density and inherent
need for less greenhouse heating, etc, what other issues
does this pattern raise por resolve? Just curious what
you ran across.
