Zone 7 -- West Texas -- where we had almost no winter
at all so I think spring started January 15.
---------------------------
Zone 9.4973 here, San Fog'cisco
69% Sun,Spring, Fall, No Summer or Winter.
Not a squash climate. Ideal for artichoke.
I don't (yet) muclch with black plastic and have soil warmth hassles.
I almost must start squash, melon indoors. Remember Ron S. who starts, waits
2 weeks, and starts a second batch in case the first is too early? He gets
maximum early with maximum safety/fallback.
I can't say just when I transplant. I use styrofaom cups for these big guys.
Hacksaw or breadknife slots (2-5) in bottom 1/4" give drainage, (all parallel
slots, 1/4-1/2" apart.) I often pre-start under 1 layer oo 1 layer, of
tissue, and plant the sprouts in the cups. There goes a week. Another week
in the cup, maybe two. A week outdoors in the cup, or two, maybe under a milk
jug or 2 liter for added warmth. I let the plant tell me when. I listen, if
I'm not otherwise occupied.
These are a long season big plant, so they get 2-3 x as many starts as
required. If they all grow (I get 1/3 - 1/2 due to neglect, er, I mean
selecting the strongest plant, the surviver) I pluck the smaller fruits,
instead of the smaller plant. In tomatoes, I pluck 3, say, out of a group of
5. But do not prune, only cage. Sorta same, except w/poor luck w/ squash
until recently, I have let them sprawl, with some guidance. So they are on
the garden edge. They shade ground...!
