>Bill, Your "hay" idea sounds good. I still believe the pine straw would
work well for the paths. I might try the chopped hay in my beds this year.
Thanks.

Oh sure it (pine needles) will, but whatever plants are near the edges, or if
you move the beds a foot, will get some acid soil. It is hard to correct for.
You mix in base, and wait a month or two and retest. But they are good if
present and suit your needs.

A bale goes pretty far. They are quite compact. But bugs like it better than
pine I would think. Next year, in some areas, if you have pathsthe width of
the hay bale, you can rake back the top, the the lower part gooes intot he
beds, replace the top and add to it, OR just add to it.

If its muddy, 4" may be required. Jeff Ball, likes a path wider than 12". If
raised beds, I would too. I use a 9-10" main path, and 2x4 is the rest, 3'
apart. One main path in a 10x20, all sq ft, my way, no raised beds. My
neighbor does a raised bed of cinderblock. Their bed is 6x20. The path is a
6ft 2x12, which they move, suspended across the cinder blocks, 4" above the
soil, Their way. They are 60+ but flexible.
YUou find your way to be flexible.

I wrote Jill a short on the hay thing. REALLY great!
Bill/SF/9.4973, but never warm...
