Asparagus Spacing?

  I just found out that we can grow asparagus here in Central
Florida. Now my question is, how do we space the asparagus in
our square foot gardens? I think they have to be 18" apart and
rows have to be 48" apart in a regular garden space. That would 
be about 6 per square foot garden. I looked in Mel's book and 
didn't see anything on asparagus. Any help will be appreciated.
