Scott, I did C and D, mixing the soil according to Mel's recipe. We got
moles and gophers, so I needed to keep them from digging in, and the soil
here is mostly decomposed granite.
As for A and B, I chose to use rough cut redwood for my boxes. You should be
able to get it up there pretty easily (I'm in San Diego) and it's very
resistant to rot and bugs, and is a nice, attractive wood.
