Friends- I hope to purchase/rent a shredder to shred leaves, etc. for my
compositors this year. Does anyone use an
electric-powered shredder to shred leaves, grasss, etc. for compost?
What brand is it? Do you like it?
bill missen.
Bill,
I just use my mower. It blows them one way and chops them up. Keep
pushing them till they pile up. They will be well ground then put on the
bagger and suck them suckas up. Dump in cart or bags and take them
where you want. The drier they are when you do it the more they will be
chopped up. The shredder would be useful though if you had quantities
of sticks. Set the mower as short as rocks will allow. It wont hurt it
in the fall. I mow 3 inches or more all summer. Then in late season I
drop it one one notch each week. Never drop it all at once. As you
probably know, even if you bagged it that would be the worst thing you
could possibly do to a lawn. I turned down a high paying contract job
because they wouldn't let it be done properly and I wouldn't have my
name associated with what would certainly happen. That lawn was the
biggest mess in an expensive neighborhood. They cut better than 2/3 off
in one cutting and left the clippings lay just like the customer
wanted. Guess who was offered the job the following year. Luckily I
was able to start in the fall and had it back in decent shape before
winter.
