Kimberly- Welcome to the list! I offer you one way to provide the cover you request for your boxes. There covers as designed are a quick and dirty solution to cold, windy days. The covers will not withstand heavy rains as designed (the covers as designed will not shed rain well- you will need to tip off the collected rain or it may tear the plastic covers or flatten your veggies!).

What these covers do well is provide shelter from wind and some cold. The covers will increase the temperature of the immediate area of your seedlings as they tend to trap warmth. The covers also tend to maintain a higher level of humidity and slow your soil's drying out. You will want to be nearby if you have significant weather changes during the day to lift or drop the covers with a stick or something so as to regulate the temperature.See the link below for a picture and description of construction.

If anyone comes up with improvements or other designs I sure would like to hear about it..

Hope this inspires you,
bill missen.

Hello,  I too am a first time square foot gardener.  I have put in 6  4 x 4'
boxes.  I am looking for some help in coming up with some kind of semi
permanent cover to put over the tops of the boxes to keep critters from
eating up all my hard work.  I sure would appreciate some help!  I have read
Mel's book but I want to cover the whole thing not just individual squares.
Thanks, Kimberly
