Dear Neale:
Welcome to the list!
Slugs are annoying little things aren't they! They become especially
aggravating when they eat your favorite plants. Unfortunately, there is no
answer to your question of how to get rid of them. I'm sure people will have
suggestions for you, however I tried them all and they simply don't work!
What I''ve tried:
sandpaper collars around the base of the plant
wood ash
Diatanacous earth (spelling is wrong)
beer cups (this does attract some, but does not get them all and is very
expensive and time consuming if you have a large garden like I do! And, if
you think emptying your collection cup is disgusting....just wait to you have
to empty beer cups with slugs floating around in them!!!)
Fruit peels & pieces of wood, etc. (same as above, except you get to kill
them after collecting them)
Slug bait (total ineffective & if you live in a rainy area it becomes time
consuming and expensive)
copper barriers - I'd spend the next 2 years putting this in my gardens
The only thing that really works is going out at night with a cup of salt
water and/or a pair of scissors. After my cup fills up and they are all
floating face down I throw the contents in the woods. After a month of doing
this, I start using just the scissors to cut them in half and leave them.
Hey, it is disgusting but if you've ever had a favorite plant stripped by
those things you'll be looking for some sort of revenge! ;-)))) (Please PETA
members - don't flame me)
The one thing I am going to try this summer is to get more toads into my
garden. I had one toad last year that was HUGE. No shortage of food for
him. I've never seen such a huge toad. Just make sure you are getting toads
-- not frogs. If you add some toad habitats, they'll stay there and help
with the problem.
Hope this helps!
