Hi Toni and Jane:
I've never pre-sprouted beans, and can't really see why one would need to.
I have excellent luck with bean germination, as long as I inoculate the
seeds with the appropriate stuff when I plant them. If I'm concerned about
my outdoor conditions being too cool and/or wet for proper germination, I
just start my seeds in Jiffy 7s under lights in my basement -- makes life a
LOT easier for me!
The damp paper towel method is a good way to test your germination rate on
most seeds, if you've had a problem or think you might (with seeds you've
stored for more than a season). However, that is _different_ than soaking a
seed in water for a period of hours -- I think I'd heed the advice of the
seed catalog on that one. In my experience, the people at Johnny's are very
knowledgeable and besides, it's in their best interest to give you
information that insures your success.
Hope this helps --
